Making your own bird food
Marvel Mix
1 cup peanut butter
1 cup vegetable shortening,
melted suit, or bacon drippings.
4 cups yellow cornmeal
1 cup white flour
Mix together
in a medium-sized pot over low heat. The heat helps to melt the
peanut butter and fat for even distribution. Do not over heat as it
will burn easily. Cool before serving. This will make a soft
doughy food that can be offered in hardware cloth cages, smeared on
bark or pinecones, or pressed into holes in a suit log. Many birds
love this mixture, such as chickadees, siskins, juncos, all kinds of
woodpeckers, brown creepers, jays, and many more. Starlings are
particularly fond of this mix, so be careful to serve it in a manner
as not to be accessible to the starlings. This is a particularly
good source of fat and nutrition in the cold winter months. Keep
extra mix covered in the refrigerator to keep it fresh.
